Origami

Origami is an original long-form improvisational format developed by The Imperfectionists. The performance begins with an audience suggestion: the name of a fictional, mythical creature, which serves as a unifying concept for the piece. The structure unfolds through a sequence of two-person scenes initiated with music and grounded in physicality and object work. These scenes are interspersed with ensemble moments, including rotating monologues and stylized movement sequences, which expand on themes and imagery introduced earlier. Connections gradually emerge across scenes through repeated language, behaviors, and visual motifs. The format allows for both grounded relationship work and escalation, with humor arising from character dynamics, physical specificity, and the accumulation and transformation of recurring elements. In the final movement, the mythical creature is physically realized by the ensemble, incorporating elements drawn from throughout the performance. The show concludes by returning to the initial physical starting points of earlier scenes, creating structural closure.
